Port-Log – The Next Generation
Our data platform, Port-Log, forms the backbone of our environmental monitoring capability. It is used by a wide variety of organisations around the world to collect, manage and display environmental data. We have seen particular success in the ports and harbours industry, where access to reliable, real-time tide and weather data is essential for the safe day-to-day running of the ports (see our short video case study demonstrating its use at ABP in Southampton).
Port-Log is consistently being updated behind the scenes in response to new customer requirements and advancements in technology. For example in the last year or so we have extended Port-Log’s data loading capability to bring in new data types and sensors, introduced the Advanced Waves Extension, and added an API known as Port-Log ‘Connect’ which allows data to be shared with remote vessels (survey boats and dredgers, for example), maritime pilots PPU’s (Portable Pilot Units) and other devices and applications e.g. the PoD Information app. This year the ‘face’ of Port-Log is also being updated, so that the front end (the part the end-user sees and interacts with) provides an improved representation of the functionality and technology working at the back end (all the technical stuff that goes on behind the scenes).
We are proud to announce that we will be rolling out Port-Log 3 – the latest version of Port-Log – this year which will gradually replace the current version. The roll-out will initially involve engagement and consultation with the utmost consideration of our existing customers and partners in mind. A consultation period prior to any changes being made will ensure smooth transition and integration. Please be rest assured that nothing will be turned off or stop working and access to your real-time and historical data will not be affected.
What’s changing? The system will work in the same way it does now, offering all the benefits and key features of Port-Log 2 – but we have updated the way that the data is displayed and modernised how the end user interacts with it, stepping away from the ‘fixed’ displays and providing a flexible, slicker and more customisable user experience. We know that change to software is sometimes unwelcome, so for those customers that feel a change is unnecessary, there will be an option within Port-Log 3 to upgrade the front end to the latest technology but keep the layouts and styling exactly as it is now.
What benefits will Port-Log 3 bring?
- Improved map interface with the ability to chose different base maps and bring in other data layers
- Different design options – so you can choose the ‘look and feel’ of your display on the fly
- Improved functionality – addition of ‘widgets’ allowing users to create their own dashboard
- Branding options – you can easily add/amend your own branding (i.e. corporate colours / logos etc.)
- See only the data that you want – select only the plots and other graphics that are relevant to you
- Amend your display at any time to meet other specific or time limited requirements while retaining the default
- Different levels of access, so only certain users can create, fix and control user specific displays as and when required
