We spotted this interesting article from AAPA Sea Ports which is equally applicable to Ports all over the world.
Preparing for an Extreme Weather World – AAPA Seaports
A lot of what we do at OceanWise centres around monitoring our environment. One of the key benefits to monitoring environmental conditions is that it allows you to see a clearer picture, not only of the here and now – the real-time data – which supports marine operations and safety, but the historical data too. Our customers are collecting vast amounts of important data every day, which if disseminated can show peaks, troughs and importantly patterns, trends and significant changes to ‘the norm’.
In the last 10 years we have watched our data platform (Port-Log) in earnest as it has reported bigger tidal surges, stronger winds, higher highs and lower lows.
How are we helping our customers be prepared and build resilience?
- We offer our experience and expertise to help customers understand what and how they can monitor their environment and tailor it to their needs. No two sites are the same.
- We are encouraging customers to look at future proofing and can help them analyse their historic data to support future developments.
- We are constantly reviewing and testing new technologies, improving our telemetry, integrating systems and flying the flag for data sharing in the industry.
- We are developing new services which eliminate the barriers for small organisations (such as small harbours) to install their own monitoring stations, so they can also benefit from the information to be learned from the data.
We will continue to develop our support for Ports and Harbours around the world and hope that we can help prepare and build resilience for the changes ahead. We will never get bored of watching the weather!
