We have come a long way since Tim Berners-Lee posted a proposal for the creation of the World Wide Web at CERN in 1991. The power of the Internet to discover, view, share and publish data, as well as documents, is less well known, with people often preferring more traditional means of exchanging data, such as on USBs. Unique Reference Identifiers (URIs) and established protocols allow almost everything we need to do with data online. This presentation highlighted W3C’s guidelines for data sharing and linking to create the ‘web of data’.

The management of spatial data in towns and cities is relatively mature, facilitated by the Smart Cities initiative across Europe and farther afield. Managing complex challenges means a smarter way of operating by using data and more innovative IT. Vicrea’s smart solutions platform is open, modular and service orientated. In collaboration with maritime data experts, OceanWise; Vicrea showed how this platform can be extended to ports and shipping.

The use of open source software is growing rapidly as organisations become more confident about it. This presentation illustrated how licence free libraries, such as GDAL and OGR, are at least equal to more established, and expensive, software, such as FME and ArcGIS Model Builder. With minimal investment organisations can execute simple commands or create scripts to undertake complex tasks and cultivate more efficient workflows. The processing of hydrographic survey data into bathymetric charts was used as an example.

iCoast is an innovative web portal that provides important information on a wide range of recreational activities, such as water sports, hiking and fishing, along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, the UK’s only natural World Heritage Site. Developed as part of the C-Scope EU project in 2013, iCoast is now adopting a sustainable business model with an eye on expanding iCoast to other parts of the South and West of England in the near future.

Sensor Web Enablement, also known as SWE, is an Open Geospatial Consortium’s standard for publishing environmental monitoring data. The results from a MEDIN funded study were used to demonstrate how SWE can help make data from existing sensor networks more readily accessible. The study, undertaken jointly by Cefas and OceanWise, used SmartBuoy, WaveNet and Port-Log as examples. OceanWise is planning to use the results of the study to make public sector sensor data available to the private sector and vice versa, a key policy aim for the current UK Government.

Ports are multi-faceted and complex businesses that create, ingest, process and re-use wide range of data. However, data management is often poorly administered or ignored altogether. PD Teesport is breaking the mould by modernising its approach to data management and at the same time enabling the port to better visualise and manage operations across a wide area. The presentation showed how GIS software and OceanWise’s suite of productivity tools is already proving to be of immense benefit.

Vattenfall, a large Swedish state owned company, has developed and operates nearly 100 offshore and onshore wind farm sites across Europe. It struggles to manage its data effectively at present with no central data storage facility as well as gathering and using data in many formats. To overcome this uneconomic way of working, Vattenfall has developed a company-wide Operations Spatial Database (OSDB) with a standardised data structure and WebGIS Gateway to store documents for all its projects and programmes. With OceanWise Marine Themes and Raster Chart data provided for geospatial context, efficiencies across its operations is now leading to improved decision making and asset management.

This customer case study from the Oil & Gas industry stressed the importance of good quality wave data to engineering design and operational planning. Premier Oil’s field development in the Falkland Islands was used to illustrate the benefit of using OceanWise’ online Environmental Data Sharing and Publishing platform, Port-Log, to scroll through complex datasets, identifying storm and other significant events and then using the system’s advanced functionality to look at directional wave spectra and reveal greater insight.

The final case study showed how the innovative use of vessel tracking and WebGIS technology is being used by Clearwater to improve the safety and security of shipping at sea. Clearwater’s state of the art 24 hour tracking operation uses technology developed by OceanWise Partner, FIND Mapping, and OceanWise’s Intelligent Marine and Coastal Mapping Data.
